A PLAIN-LANGUAGE STARTING POINT
Understanding the
UN justice system.
Workplace disputes in the UN can be addressed through informal resolution or formal procedures. The right route depends on your organisation, your employment status and the decision or concern involved.

INFORMAL RESOLUTION
A space for dialogue
The UN Ombudsman and Mediation Services can help eligible personnel explore workplace concerns through confidential, impartial assistance. Mediation is voluntary and seeks a solution the parties can accept.
ADVICE ALONG THE WAY
Ask about legal assistance
The Office of Staff Legal Assistance (OSLA) provides legal advice and representation to eligible staff and former staff of the UN and participating entities. Check eligibility and request assistance directly from OSLA.
THE FORMAL ROUTE · WHERE APPLICABLE
01 / REVIEW
Management evaluation
For many administrative decisions, a management evaluation must be requested before applying to UNDT. It reviews whether the decision complied with the applicable rules. Exceptions include disciplinary measures and certain decisions based on advice from technical bodies.
02 / FIRST INSTANCE
UN Dispute Tribunal · UNDT
UNDT hears challenges to administrative decisions alleged to breach a staff member’s terms of appointment or employment contract, within its jurisdiction. Eligibility, filing requirements and time limits apply.
03 / APPEAL
UN Appeals Tribunal · UNAT
UNAT reviews appeals from UNDT and other bodies within its jurisdiction. An appeal must rely on the grounds set out in its Statute. It is not an automatic opportunity to start the case again.
Keep an eye on deadlines.
Formal procedures have strict time limits. Do not assume that informal discussions or a request for help pause them. Extensions and mediation-related rules apply only in specific circumstances; check the official guidance for your situation.
Working for another international organisation?
The UNDT–UNAT route does not cover every international organisation or every type of contract. Some organisations recognise the ILO Administrative Tribunal; others have different arrangements. Start with your organisation’s rules and the tribunal’s jurisdiction.
